Berwick rider Carlos Villar is in Middlesbrough's specialist spinal unit where he will have an exploratory operation. The Argentinian crashed heavily in Berwick's home meeting with Newport on Saturday and doctors have told him he may never walk again.

Bandits promoter Peter Waite said: "Everyone at the club is devastated by this news and we can only hope for some more encouraging news from the hospital." Villar, in his debut season in British speedway, had become a crowd favorite through his spectacular racing style - a style which may not be seen on-track again.

The news of Villar's injury puts a sour note to the end of a successful season for the Bandits in which they were on the fringes of the title race throughout and lost just once at home.
