Ricky Ashworth went through the card at Newcastle's Brough Park as Sheffield Pirtek Tigers came close to completing a dramatic comeback in a 47-46 Premier League defeat.

Ashworth won all five of his rides with Sheffield pulling back a mid-meeting 14-point deficit to finish a single point adrift thanks to a last-heat 5-1.

And the aggregate bonus point keeps them firmly in the driving seat for a top three finish - which will give them some choice of their quarter-final opposition in the play-offs.

Tigers, without Kyle Legault due to his national final in Canada and with David Speight standing in for Benji Compton at reserve, looked set for a heavy defeat when the Diamonds dominated the first half of the meeting.Ashworth's efforts for double points were successful when he took the full six points, Tigers notching an 8-1 from Heat 11 with Ben Wilson pouncing on a last-bend error from Adam McKinna for second place.

The next three races were shared with Lemon exceeding the time allowance at the start-line in Heat 13 and being sent back 15 metres, and that virtually ended the Tigers' hopes of a complete turnaround.
