Porsche has pulled the wraps off the car that will spearhead its return to the Le Mans 24 Hours and the World Endurance Championship in 2014, the 919 Hybrid.

More than a year after announcing its plans to return to the top flight of sportscar racing, Porsche has finally revealed its challenger ahead of the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

In that time, Porsche has embarked on an intense development cycle and announced details of its quest to secure another Le Mans title, 16 years after its last appearance and its last win with the 911 GT1-98.

The 919 Hybrid LMP1 racer is a petrol-electric hybrid machine developed around a single turbocharged 2.0 V4 petrol engine, which is supported by an electric motor mounted within the front axle and a lithium-ion battery. They provide drive to the front wheels, allowing the car the capability to run as a four-wheel drive machine.

The 919 Hybrid also features two energy recovery systems, including brake energy recuperation and an exhaust-mounted thermal energy recovery system.

For Porsche, it is hoped these innovative features will allow it to gain an edge on Audi and Toyota, with whom the manufacturer will be directly targeting in 2014.

In the run up to the reveal of the 919 Hybrid, Porsche confirmed its driver partnerships for both the Le Mans 24 Hours and the World Endurance Championship, with big name signing Mark Webber driving alongside Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley in the #20 car, while Romain Dumas, Marc Lieb and Neel Jani will drive the #14 machine.

The Porsche 919 Hybrid will make its competition debut at the Silverstone 6 Hours on April 20, the opening round of the WEC.
