John Bowe and his OzEmail Ford Falcon starred in what fans are already calling the best Top Ten Shootout in Australian motorsport history.

Setting a miraculous time of 2min 07:95secs, Bowe gave the OzEmail Racing Team hopes of a pole position, and it took a simply amazing lap by Greg Murphy to shift the black Falcon to second for the start of tomorrow's 'Great Race'. The Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 now has a firm favourite, with the swing of Ford fans firmly behind the pair of Brad Jones and John Bowe after easily being the fastest Blue Oval car during Shootout.

"I don't think we could have gone any faster today - I have to take my hat off to Greg and his team," Bowe said, "There's no way that anyone would have thought it possible to get into the 2min 06secs bracket.

"The OzEmail team have done a fantastic job this weekend. Our preparation has been first class and we have a very fast car. I've been saying all week that Brad and I are a strong combination and, after today, we've got as good a chance as anyone."

For team boss Brad Jones, the result had a sense of bitter-sweet.

"John did a great job today - his Shootout lap was one of the best I have ever seen," he said, "To be on the front row is great but, after being in the same spot last year, it's kind of a bridesmaid feeling.

"We now have to focus on the race. I've wanted to win Bathurst since I was five years old and we've proven today that we have a real chance of doing that, so we need to make sure all our effort goes into that from now on."

The white OzEmail Falcon of John Cleland and Andrew Jones will start from 19th position tomorrow, with both drivers confident of a top ten result. Jones was impressive in Saturday's practice session., having decided to work on long-distance settings.

"The quality of our cars has been shown by Brad and John today - they are as fast as anything out there," Jones said, "Because we weren't in the Shootout, we used this morning's practice session to run with a race set-up and I felt the best I've done so far."
