Shell Helix Racing's Steve 'junior' Johnson and his long-time partner Bree Holman have announced that they are expecting their first child.

The V8 Supercar ace was grinning from ear to ear when he was told the news.

"Bree and I are both over the moon," he said. "We've been planning this for a while but we never knew that it would happen so quickly.

"I have friends that have been trying to start a family for ages so we were expecting this to take some time; here we are a couple of months later and I'm going to be a dad."

The child is expected in March.

"I already know that the timing is not perfect, the baby is due on March 18, which is the Clipsal weekend," he said. "Hopefully it'll be a few days early or a bit late and make life simple for us.

"At this stage I'm not sure what we'll do if Bree goes into labour while I'm in Adelaide. Obviously I want to be there for Bree and experience the birth of my child.

"We'll see what happens a little closer to the time and make the call then."

However Johnson was quick to say that he wouldn't be pushing his child to follow in his footsteps motorsport.

"My children can do whatever they want in life," he said. "My dad has never pushed me to do something I didn't want to do, and I'll be doing the same.

"If my kid wants to drive a car, that's fine. If it wants to be an accountant or a ballerina that's fine too. As long as it is healthy and happy, then I'm sure we'll all be happy."
