Jamie Whincup made it two wins from the opening two races of the Coffee Club V8 Supercar Challenge at Surfers Paradise after once again holding off the challenge of Garth Tander on the Gold Coast.

The leading finishers proved to be a repeat of race one, with Ford Performance Racing ace Mark Winterbottom joining Whincup and Tander on the podium for the second straight race.

Whincup capitalised on a slick pit stop from Team Vodafone to take the lead on lap nine of the 27-lap race and produced a mistake-free run to the chequered flag. For Tander however, pit strategy was to be the key to his undoing as he pitted early but got stuck behind Tony D'Alberto on rejoining the circuit. The Toll HRT man was held up for three-quarters of a lap and ultimately paid the price when Whincup pitted two laps later as he was released onto the track with a decisive lead.

Tander nailed the start sailing into the lead in the Toll Holden Racing Team Commodore but Whincup argued the position under brakes into the first turn with the pair making contact. Whincup made the chicane but Tander had no option but to straight-line it to avoid what would have been a messy collision.

Tander posted a series of quick laps but it was all to nothing as he lost his advantage following the pit-stops, with Whincup back in front.

No sooner had Whincup settled into a comfortable lead the safety car was brought out after Fabian Coulthard's Glenfords Falcon stopped nose-in at the turn 12 hairpin. Moments later Jason Richards cannoned into the right-side of Coulthard's stricken Ford. The safety car was out for five laps as the recovery truck removed the Glenfords car from the circuit.

Whincup was able to hold on when racing resumed for a second win of the weekend, with Tander unable to find a way through and Winterbottom not far behind in third.

Lee Holdsworth took fourth ahead of Steve Johnson, while Rick Kelly came from the back of the field to take a fine sixth.
