Organisers of the 72nd Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo have been forced to cancel the opening stage of the day - Selonnet-Breziers [22.64 km] - due to safety concerns.

Early reports suggest that despite stopping access to the first stage of the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship at 0548hrs local time this morning, thousands of spectators had already made it to the roadside on SS1.

The crowds were so large that organisers cancelled the first pass through the Selonnet - Breziers test as there was just to many fans on the stage making it impossible to run at race speeds safely.

The rally will now get underway at 0826 hrs local time [0726hrs UK time] with SS2: Piegut-Urtis [20.18km].

More to follow then...
