Skoda has announced that it remains on schedule with the development of its new Fabia R5 rally car and that it should be ready for homologation by mid-2015.

Asia-Pacific Champion Jan Kopecky and 2014 European Rally Champion Esapekka Lappi put the new Fabia R5, the successor to the successful Fabia Super 2000, through its paces last week during a series of 'comprehensive tests'.

"We tested the new Fabia R5 on asphalt and recently on gravel. The new car feels very good on all the surfaces. We are definitely on the right track," said Kopecky.

Lappi was also impressed with his outings in Skoda's new rally car, which was still sporting its camouflaged 'zebra' look: "I think the Fabia R5 will continue the success story of Skoda in motorsport," he added.

Testing with the Fabia R5 will now continue throughout Europe over the next few weeks, with veteran rally driver Freddy Loix and Raimund Baumschlager among those continuing to give input on the development of it.

"We want to have the new Fabia R5 approved by mid-2015 and are right on schedule to achieve this," Skoda boss Michal Hrabanek underlined.
