Sebastian Ogier has immediately picked up where he left off from Rally Sweden by taking control in Mexico by pulling out a slender lead over Thierry Neuville.

The three-time reigning WRC champion has enjoyed a flawless start to the defence of his title having claimed victories in the two opening rounds, while also taking maximum bonus points on the Power stages, and it continued in Rally Mexico over the short three opening stages.

Ogier holds a tight 1.7s advantage over Neuville in the updated Hyundai i20 WRC, while his Volkswagen Motorsport team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala also produced a solid start to Rally Mexico by taking third 3.3s off of the French driver.

Andreas Mikkelsen, who topped the shakedown times earlier in the day, claimed fourth as Dani Sordo in the sister Hyundai to Neuville completed the top five order.

It was an all Hyundai and Volkswagen top six with Hayden Paddon next up while Lorenzo Bertelli led the Ford charge in front of Martin Prokop and Ott Tanak. The three M-Sport Fords of Benito Guerra, Mads Ostberg and Eric Camilli rounded out the WRC challengers, with Citroen skipping Mexico.

In WRC2 Armin Kremer heads the field for Skoda in front of team-mate Teemu Suninen.

Rally Mexico continues Friday (4th March) with long and extensive running on gravel along the Mexican countryside having left the Guanajuato city stages.
