Dani Sordo has lost his third place finish on Rally Mexico after he was handed a two-minute penalty for a tyre infringement.

Sordo used 29 tyres during the event, one in excess of the number permitted and a breach of Article 7.2 of the Supplementary Regulations of the event. As a result he drops to fourth overall, 1.5s behind M-Sport's Mads Ostberg.

Speaking prior to the penalty, Sordo said: "I am delighted to be on the podium here in Mexico and to take my first top-three finish of the season. This is a very tough and challenging rally, so we have had a few complications along the way, but I think this is the same for everybody. We just got on with our job and learned a lot about the performance of the New Generation i20 WRC in these conditions, which will be very helpful for the future.

"We ended Saturday with a relatively comfortable hold of third place so we knew we would have to take it easy on the long Guanajuato stage and in the Power Stage, just to bring the car home. We didn't push and we can be happy with this result.

"It hasn't been an easy rally for the team so it is nice to have the chance to celebrate a podium after all their hard work. We have some things we will learn from this weekend but overall we have a lot to be pleased with. We now look forward to Argentina with enthusiasm."

Meanwhile, Hyundai team manager Alain Penasse said a "communication error" was to blame for using the extra tyre.

"Unfortunately Dani and Marc were penalised of two minutes after the finish of Rally Mexico today and consequently dropped to fourth in the overall classification. Due to an obvious communication error, three new tyres and two used ones - instead of three used and two new - were fitted to the New Generation i20 WRC #4 at the Tyre Fitting Zone after SS20 this morning," he explained.

"This means one tyre in excess was used compared to the number allowed by the regulations. We will now go back to Alzenau and investigate the issue further.

"For sure though, this doesn't take away the performance of both the crew and the team throughout this challenging rally," he added.
