Regis Laconi is confident he can produce his best qualifying performance of the season after an encouraging provisional performance in Portugal.

Having struggled with set-up woes aboard the PSG-1 Kawasaki all season, the level playing field around the new Portimao circuit has played into Laconi's hands as the Frenchman diced for positions inside the top ten throughout the day.

Eventually finishing up comfortably inside the provisional Superpole positions in ninth, Laconi insists there is more to come from the package having 'forgotten' to change to intermediate tyres during the track's prime state.

"I'm totally enthusiastic of the new track which is really dynamic," he said. "We worked really hard and well during the entire qualifying session improving a lot the results achieved in the free practice of the morning.

"I was so focused on the track that when I returned into the pit garage to make a tyre's change to further on improve the result, I didn't realize that the session was finishing in about 3 minutes so I have not been able to improve the time further on. I'm really confident of tomorrow and it think it can be my best qualify of the entire season."

Ultimately a mixed day for Kawasaki, with Pedercini's Ayrton Badovini also an impressive 16th, Laconi's PSG-1 team-mate Makoto Tamada was finding things rather more difficult down in a lowly 30th.

"The new Portuguese track is fantastic but unfortunately the lack of grip didn't permit me to feel the bike as I would like. In the free practice session of the morning I hadn't any particular problem so we decided to maintain the same set-up for the afternoon session but this didn't bring any improvements.

"We absolutely have to solve the problem for tomorrow's qualifying session as I really want to give to the team a good result in this last round."
