  • Tom Sykes becomes the first Superbike rider to break 1min 35secs at Misano as he takes pole position
  • It is a second pole position of the season for the Kawasaki, bringing his career tally to 21
  • Davide Giugliano and Sylvain Guintoli round out the front row for Ducati and Aprilia

Tom Sykes has become the first rider to lap the Marco Simoncelli World Circuit at Misano in under 1min 35secs on a Superbike as he cracked Troy Corser's four-year old lap record for pole position.

A second Superpole of the season for Sykes, though there is certainly no doubting the Kawasaki rider's pedigree over a single lap - as represented by his newly increased tally of 21 career pole positions -, his pace setting performance at Misano came as something of a surprise on a weekend largely dominated by Ducati and Aprilia.

Indeed, Ducati's Davide Giugliano looked set for pole position with an almost record-breaking lap during his second run, but his impressive 1min 35.079secs would be usurped by Sykes's 1min 34.883secs, his third lap of session but the first on the qualifying tyre.

Sykes and Giugliano will be joined on the front row by Sylvain Guintoli on the best of the Aprilias, with Loris Baz improving to fourth with his final lap to head up the second row with Marco Melandri and Toni Elias.

It was a particularly strong turn by the latter after being forced to work his way through SP1 first, the Spaniard taking his privateer Aprilia all the way to sixth on the grid.

Chaz Davies leads row three with Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty as Honda and Suzuki struggled to mount a front-running challenge, while Niccolo Canepa was the sole EVO rider to progress to SP2 before going on to qualify in tenth, ahead of Alex Lowes and Leon Haslam.

Outside the top twelve, EVO leader David Salom will get underway in 13th, ahead of Matteo Baiocco and Ayrton Badovini.
