After the celebrations calmed on Jonathan Rea's double victory at Misano, Tom Sykes went under the lap record to top the times at the in-season test with a blistering best lap of 1m 34.674s.

Overnight thunderstorms saw the day start in the damp but once it quickly dried up the times duly dropped in ideal conditions. As a result, Sykes - who signed a new two-year deal to stay at Kawasaki in World Superbikes in the morning - went quicker than Rea's lap record set last year in the final minutes of the second session.

The Kawasaki Racing Team spent the majority of the test focusing on electronics and suspension set-up for its 2017 challenger, while all teams also worked on four new front and three new rear tyre compounds introduced by Pirelli.

Rea kept his Kawasaki team-mate in close company in second - just 0.103s back - with Davide Giugliano repeating the race two podium finishers in third on the combined times for Racing Ducati.

Leon Camier enjoyed a productive day on the MV Agusta RC F4 RR in fourth having pinched the place from Jordi Torres as he beat the Althea BMW rider by just 0.001s on the top times.

Chaz Davies completed the top six runners on his factory Ducati with top Honda rider Michael van der Mark seventh and the recovering Alex Lowes eighth for Pata Yamaha.

Lorenzo Savadori lifted his IodaRacing Aprilia into the top ten late on and just ahead of Nicky Hayden as stand-in rider Niccolo Canepa beat fellow reserve rider Raffaele De Rosa - who replaced Markus Reiterberger after he suffered a fractured vertebrae in his race two crash.

Josh Brookes claimed 13th on the combined timesheet on the Milwaukee BMW as Alex de Angelis and Anthony West rounded out the top 15.
