Eugene Laverty says it would be a joy to see Sam Lowes win the World Supersport Championship for Parkalgar Honda this year after he was beaten to the title in 2009 and 2010.

The Irishman finished runner-up to Cal Crutchlow in 2009 and again to Kenan Sofuoglu in 2010, missing out on the title in final round showdowns each time.

Nonetheless, Laverty's efforts were still rewarded with a promotion to the World Superbike Championship with the factory Yamaha team, opening the door for Lowes to step into his position.

Though less experienced than his predicted title rivals, Lowes has already proved himself to be a capable contender on the bike, with Laverty admitting he was impressed with his run to third at Phillip Island.

"It's great to see Sam doing such a good job. I was with the team for two years, so I'm happy to see their continued success," he told Crash.net. "Sam is a nice lad, very young and has potential. To come into his first proper race and be leading into the final bend is no mean feat. I will be happy to see him do well this year.

Laverty will also be supporting Lowes in his title bid, saying he would be delighted to see someone win the title for Parkalgar Honda (PTR) following his own near-misses.

"I'll be pleased if he wins the title. It wasn't just me who was disappointed last year, it was the team because they deserved it. If Sam gets it then I will be pleased because I will feel as if he completed my unfinished business for me!"
