Chaz Davies has begun the quest to break his World Supersport victory duck at Assen in fine style by topping the timesheets during opening free practice.

The Briton, who finished a close second behind ParkinGO team-mate Luca Scassa last time out at Donington Park, jumped to the front in the final minutes to deny countryman Sam Lowes the top spot.

Lowes, racing at Assen for the first time in three years, had looked strong at the front after displacing Luca Scassa with just over ten minutes of the session remaining, but would fall three tenths shy of a charging Davies.

Florian Marino was an impressive third best for Ten Kate Honda, ahead of Kawasaki's David Salom and series leader Scassa. Series veterans Broc Parkes and Fabien Foret - who missed the Donington Park race through injury - followed in sixth and seventh.

Massimo Roccoli made it three Kawasakis inside the top ten in eighth, ahead of privateer Yamaha man Roberto Tamburini and the second Parkalgar Honda of Miguel Praia.

His PTR counterpart James Ellison was 13th best on the Bogdanka-backed Honda, while Donington Park podium winner Gino Rea made a quiet start to his weekend in 15th after missing the opening half of the session.

The bumper field sees three new entries this weekend, from local competitors Kervin Bos and James Van der Aa, as well as Austrian racer Yves Polzer.
