Florian Marino has taken provisional pole position for the third round of the 2011 World Supersport Championship at Assen, home soil for his Ten Kate Honda team.

The French rookie was an impressive third fastest during free practice but made even greater strides during Q1 to be the only rider to break 1min 39secs.

It was enough to put a good two tenths between himself and Yamaha's Luca Scassa, who joined his rival in making improvements this afternoon. David Salom made it three different manufacturers inside the top three aboard his Kawasaki.

Morning pace setter Chaz Davies was only fifth best this time, just behind fellow FP1 front runner Sam Lowes, while Broc Parkes gave chase just five hundredths behind in sixth position.

Currently third in the standings, Robbin Harms was seventh quickest on his eponymous Honda, ahead of Marino's Ten Kate team-mate Fabien Foret, while Gino Rea was able to crack the top ten in ninth on his Step Racing bike.

Further back, James Ellison crept up the order with the 13th quickest time, but there was less fortune for his Bogdanka PTR team-mate Pawel Szkopek, who suffered a fall.
