Luca Scassa is well place to extend his margin at the top of the World Supersport standings after claiming pole position for the third round at Assen.

The ParkinGO Yamaha rider was in excellent form as he stormed to the top of the timesheets with just five minutes remaining, the Italian - who won the first two races of the season - emerging a comfortable two tenths up on Sam Lowes.

A dominant performance by both Scassa and Lowes, who heads into the Assen race eager to make up for his failure to finish last time out at Donington Park, the pair commanded a respective six and four tenth margin over the competition.

Second free practice pace setter Broc Parkes made it three manufacturers inside the top three with the third best time on the Kawasaki ZX-6R, while Fabien Foret launched up the order late on to snatch the final front row starting position.

His Ten Kate Honda team-mate Florian Marino failed to better his provisional pole setting time from Q1, the Frenchman nonetheless content with his best grid position yet.

He will start alongside Chaz Davies, who saw his hopes of improving late on ruined by an accident, while David Salom couldn't better his Q1 effort as he dropped from third to seventh position.

Roberto Tamburini will start eighth on his privateer Bike Service Yamaha, ahead of Robbin Harms and Massimo Roccoli.

Of the remaining British contingent, Gino Rea is 11th on the grid, while James Ellison slipped back down the order again to end up just behind his countryman in 12th.
