Chaz Davies got his fourth round of the 2011 World Supersport Championship off to a strong start at Monza as he swept to the top of the timesheets in first free practice.

The Briton, a maiden WSS winner last time out at Assen, picked up where he left off as he held firm during the final ten minutes of the FP1 session.

The only rider to sneak below 1min 49secs, Davies edged out the Kawasaki pairing of David Salom and Broc Parkes, the latter bouncing back to third position following an earlier tumble.

Davies's team-mate and series leader Luca Scassa was fourth best having held down the best time for much of the session, ahead of Ten Kate Honda's Fabien Foret and Parkalgar Honda's Sam Lowes, the youngster venturing onto track for the first time since damaging his collarbone in a spectacular crash at Assen.

Local rider Roberto Tamburini was seventh best on the Bike Service Yamaha, ahead of PTR stable-mates James Ellison and Miguel Praia, while Florian Marino rounded out the top ten on the second Ten Kate machine.

Further back, Robbin Harms - currently fourth in the overall standings after a strong start to the season - was 13th, while Gino Rea was 17th best.
