Ondrej Jezek comfortably bettered the official lap record to lead championship hopeful Roberto Tamburini in a closely packed Superstock 1000 FP2 in Magny-Cours.

The Ducati-mounted Czech rider - one of only two-non Italians to stand on the podium in the class in 2015 - enjoyed a slender advantage over Tamburini at the close of the session, the Italian's best time just 0.029s off the top.

Indeed the top-four were separated by the finest of margins, as Jeremy Guarnoni (+0.034s) and Raffaele De Rosa (+0.042s) lapped within half a tenth of Jezek's fastest time.

Tamburini maintains slim hopes of claiming the class title on Sunday. Sat 25 points behind Lorenzo Savadori, he will need to triumph in the race and hope misfortune befalls the Italian for the second race day running at the French venue.

All things considered, the former will be content with his day's work as Savadori trailed in fifth, 0.104s off the top time, having run off track at the downhill and tricky turn 15.

Impressive Frenchamn Mathieu Gines - making his first appearance in the class in 2015 - completed the top six, just four hundredths off the current championship leader.

In seventh place and 0.3s back of Gines came Federico D'Annunzio, who continued his improvement to sit comfortably inside the top ten at the close of the day. Countryman Kev Calia wasn't far behind with Marc Moser ninth.
