Jeremy Guarnoni claimed a famous home pole position in wet conditions at Magny-Cours, his first in the class in almost two years, as championship hopeful Roberto Tamburini endured a nightmare afternoon.

Yamaha mounted Guarnoni bettered Bryan Staring's lap of 1m 58.261s on his final circuit, ensuring he was the only man in the class to lap in the 1m 57s in treacherous conditions.

Indeed it was an afternoon that may have decisively ended the slim title hopes of Tamburini, who will start Sunday's race from 17th.

The Italian needs to win the race to have any chance of triumphing in the overall standings and hope misfortune befalls current leader Lorenzo Savadori. Italian Savadori kept his Aprilia RSV4 upright to qualify eighth.

Behind Guarnoni and Staring, Ondrej Jezek completed the front row with Matthieu Lussiana making a welcome return to the sharp end of the top ten with the fourth fastest time.

Kev Calia will start from the middle of the second row in fifth, a place ahead of the impressive Lukas Trautmann.
