A year after his brother took a famous win around his home Chang International Circuit, Ratthapong Wilairot is setting himself up to challenge for a similar feat after topping the first day of free practice in the World Supersport class.

The youngster, who finished fifth in the same race as his better known sibling Ratthapark romped to victory in front of a thrilled Thai audience, struck to the front in the closing stages of the FP2 session to end the day as the surprise pace setter.

His fastest time came to dethrone Kenan Sofuoglu from the top of the timesheets, the Turk having spent much of the session on top but still ending up in second place.

Jules Cluzel completed the top three for MV Agusta, ahead of fellow F3 rider Gino Rea, the Briton making a late improvement to jump to fourth and displace FP1 pace setter Randy Krummenacher.

With the top ten automatically qualifying for SP2 as part of the World SSP class' shaken up format for 2016, Kyle Smith, Nico Terol, Alex Baldolini, PJ Jacobsen and Luke Stapleford all have a shot at pole position tomorrow, the latter particularly impressing on his first visit to Thailand.
