Jules Cluzel has resisted a late charge from Kawasaki Puccetti Racing duo Randy Krummenacher and Kenan Sofuoglu to hold on top spot in the opening free practice session at Aragon as the World Supersport championship returns to Europe.

The MV Agusta rider had been fighting within the midfield for the majority of the first session but after tweaks in the garage the French rider left the field reeling with a 1m 55.900s, pulling out almost half a second on chasing pack.

The Kawasaki duo duly responded but both Krummenacher and Sofuoglu remained a tenth off the MV Agusta rider to take second and third respectively, with American PJ Jacobsen a third of a second further back in fourth.

The first session was briefly suspended by a red flag stoppage after British rider Kyle Smith and Australian Glenn Scott collided on track.

It was later confirmed by the medical director that Scott suffered an open left tibia fracture which requires surgery, ruling him out of action for the rest of the weekend.

Both walked away from the incident but failed to reappear for the final ten minutes of session.

Nicolas Terol grabbed fifth place at his local circuit, heading an MV Agusta trio in front of Lorenzo Zanetti and Gino Rea. Federico Caricasulo, Ilya Mikhalchik and Alex Baldolini rounded out the top ten runners.
