Kenan Sofuoglu has become the early pace setter at Imola after spending the entire opening free practice session at the top of the timesheet and ended the morning a third of a second up on Jules Cluzel.

The defending World Supersport champion instantly charged to the front with an opening flyer and rarely looked troubled at the top chipping away through the 1m 52s bracket.

The Turkish rider was threatening to pull out almost a second over the chasing pack but late improvements from title rivals Cluzel and PJ Jacobsen ensured the top three were only split by less than half a second.

Lorenzo Zanetti enjoyed an impressive FP1 to take fourth overall ahead of Assen rostrum-winner Gino Rea with Alex Baldolini in sixth.

Christian Gamarino and Ayrton Badovini ensured there was a strong Italian presence within the top eight as Assen winner Kyle Smith and Czech rider Ondrej Jezek completed the top ten.

Championship leader Randy Krummenacher made a steady start to his race weekend in 11th while former British Supersport duo Luke Stapleford and Kyle Ryde trailed in 21st and 22nd respectively.
