Jules Cluzel has grabbed pole position at Imola after making the most of a mistake by Kenan Sofuoglu in Superpole qualifying.

The MV Agusta rider laid down a strong marker for provisional pole with a 1m 51.132s but Sofuoglu had been in imperious form at the Italian circuit having comfortably topped every free practice session.

However, on his final flyer the Turkish rider was slightly held up by traffic and after failing to set lap time good enough for pole in the earlier runs he could not bridge the gap to Cluzel and will line up in second despite looking assured for pole earlier in the day.

The front two will be joined by fellow title rival PJ Jacobsen on the first row who bumped championship leader into fourth as Lorenzo Zanetti completed the top five.

Behind the French rider is an Italian trio of Ayrton Badovini, Federico Caricasulo and Alex Baldolini ahead of British rider and Assen podium-winner Gino Rea. Ondrej Jezek, Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Alessandro Zaccone complete the fourth row.
