Gino Rea has ended Friday free practice on top at his home round at Donington Park in an extremely tight FP2 which saw the top four split by less than one-tenth of a second.

The GRT MV Agusta rider made a late break to the top of the timesheet with just over five minutes remaining and despite a flurry of improvements throughout the World Supersport pack he held on to the headlines by just 0.037s from Randy Krummenacher's final flyer.

The Puccetti Kawasaki rider displaced his team-mate at the chequered flag with Kenan Sofuoglu being forced to settle for third after suffering a small collision with Alex Baldolini midway through the session.

2015 British Supersport champion Luke Stapleford completed the tight top four on his Profile Racing Triumph with PJ Jacobsen, Ayrton Badovini and Illia Mikhalchik cut adrift.

British rider Kyle Smith ended Friday eighth on the combined free practice results to bag himself an automatic entry into Superpole two along with Lorenzo Zanetti and Ondrej Jezek as Jules Cluzel missed out in 13th.

After Sofuoglu collided with Baldolini at the Melbourne hairpin each rider lost a huge chunk of running time due to minor repairs, which enabled Stapleford to blast his Profile Tracing Triumph to the top of the standings with 15 minutes remaining.

With a rapid-fire of changes at the sharp end Rea went quickest with five minutes remaining and despite a new personal best of the weekend by Sofuoglu he failed to topple the British rider by just under five-thousandths of a second. At the flag Krummenacher then pinched second off of the Turkish rider as less than one-tenth separated the top four.
