PJ Jacobsen has topped the opening free practice session at Assen ahead of defending World Supersport champion Kenan Sofuoglu as their battle for the quickest time was cut short by a red flag.

The Puccetti Kawasaki Racing rider had led FP1 for the majority of the session as the pack got up to speed but as the pace sharpened with 10 minutes to go Jacobsen nipped ahead with a 1m 39.122s.

Sofuoglu responded with a 1m 39.135s to miss out by just 0.013s but he was unable to improve again as a red flag was thrown out 1m 03s before the scheduled finish for a crash at turn one which split oil on the track.

The pair were a stretch ahead of the rest of the field with Lucas Mahias on the GRT Yamaha in third by over seventh-tenths of a second off the top two, with Kallio Racing Yamaha's Sheridan Morais fourth and Gemar Team Lorini Honda's Kyle Smith in fifth, who stormed to an impressive victory at Assen last year in mixed conditions.

Michael Canducci on the Puccetti Junior Kawasaki claimed an impressive sixth ahead of experience World Supersport hand Gino Rea, who claimed a rostrum at the Dutch track 12 months ago, in front of Jules Cluzel on the CIA Landlords Insurance Honda, Puccetti Kawasaki rider Kyle Ryde and Profile Racing Triumph's Luke Stapleford.
