Kenan Sofuoglu has edged clear of the World Supersport field at Portimao with Jules Cluzel in second and title rival Lucas Mahias in third to set-up an intriguing battle.

The defending World Supersport champion trails Mahias by a single point heading into round nine at Portimao and has started on the front foot by topping FP2 by four-tenths of a second ahead of Cluzel.

Sofuoglu’s last win at Portimao came back in 2010 for Honda, while Cluzel was the last World Supersport race winner at the Portuguese track in 2015, as the pair demonstrated their experience at the circuit by pulling clear of the chasing pack.

Mahias led that charge in third for GRT Yamaha ahead of MV Agusta’s PJ Jacobsen with Germany race winner Sherdian Morais completed the top five for Kallio Racing Yamaha.

Federico Caricasulo, who was injured in a crash at the Lausitzring last time out, bounced back in sixth for GRT Yamaha ahead of Michael Canducci and Niki Tuuli as Gino Rea and Christian Gamarino booked their automatic spots into Superpole two by completing the top ten in FP2.
