Kenan Sofuoglu has clinched pole position by just 0.035s from World Supersport title rival Lucas Mahias at Portimao.

The defending World Supersport champion trails Mahias by just a single point heading into the Portuguese round and will start from pole position thanks to his 1m 45.541s which the GRT Yamaha rider failed to better by a fraction.

Despite missing out on pole Mahais shuffled into second place ahead of PJ Jacobsen on the MV Agusta, to see the front row split by just 0.050s, with Sheridan Morais displaced on to the second row having crashed out of his final flying lap on the Kallio Racing Yamaha.

Jules Cluzel was another to suffer a near-miss in qualifying as he lost his final lap due to a mistake at turn eight and will start from fifth place on the CIA Landlords Insurance Honda ahead of Niki Tuuli on the Kallio Racing Yamaha.

Federico Caricasulo has bounced back from his off in Germany on the GRT Yamaha to qualify seventh ahead of Profile Racing Triumph’s Luke Stapleford.

Gino Rea, who tangled with Sofuoglu in Superpole two, could only manage ninth on the Go Eleven Kawasaki but in front of Christian Gamarino (Bardahl Evan Bros Honda) and Christoffer Bergman (CIA Landlord Insurance Honda) as Puccetti Junior Kawasaki rider Michael Canducci completed the Superpole contenders.
