Kyle Smith has topped the opening free practice session at the final World Supersport round as title contender Kenan Sofuoglu makes a steady comeback from injury.

Smith has clinched victory in the past two World Supersport rounds in Qatar and duly demonstrated his impressive pace at the Losail International Circuit by topping FP1 having endured a tricky campaign for Gemar Team Lorini Honda having failed to reach the podium all season.

The British rider narrowly held off championship leader Lucas Mahias to take top spot by 0.072s, while the Frenchman’s title rival Sofuoglu made an impressive comeback by finishing FP1 seventh fastest on his return from a triple hip break suffered a month ago at Magny-Cours.

Federico Caricasulo ended FP1 third fastest ahead of Anthony West and Jules Cluzel with Niki Tuuli narrowly in front of Sofuoglu, who will need to be given the all-clear by the medical team to race in Qatar, as Lorenzo Zanetti, Luke Stapleford and PJ Jacobsen rounded out the top ten.
