Alain Menu is chasing a second win of the season in the seventh round of the World Touring Car Championship after claiming the first pole position around the streets of Pau.

Menu has already tasted the winners champagne this season after triumphing at Zandvoort from pole position and having completed the first half of his task with a marvellous effort in qualifying around the streets of the French circuit, the Swiss driver is looking for a repeat performance.

It was a visually spectacular lap from Menu, taking several risks with the circuit's fearsome kerbs in a bid to shave off the last few tenths he needed to guarantee pole position would rest with him. His determined driving paid off to help him to a good four tenths up from Yvan Muller in second.

"I always enjoy street circuits and Pau I like," the Chevrolet driver said. "It's not easy to go fast here without making a mistake so I'm pleased with pole. I had to keep pushing right to the end because my initial time was only one tenth faster than Yvan Muller's.

"After an attempt in which I lost some time behind Porteiro I tried again and on that lap I don't think I could have gone any faster.

"Of course it helps to be on pole but then I have nineteen laps to do so we'll have to see. The length of the race could be tricky on the tyres, especially here because there are so many corners in which you accelerate out of fast."
