Nicolas Hamilton could be set for a surprise switch into the European Touring Car Cup after it emerged that he is set to test with the Special Tuning Racing team.

Hamilton, the younger brother of F1 champion Lewis, has spent the past two seasons competing in the Renault Clio Cup UK, but has now had a seat fitting with STR ahead of a proposed test in its SEAT Leon in the next week.

The 20-year-old has been somewhat coy about his plans for the year ahead, although he did comment on Twitter earlier this month that he was 'going to Preston for something very exciting which I cannot tell you guys yet'. The STR team is based close to Preston in the village of Forton.

Hamilton then revealed this week that he was again heading north for a seat fitting before a proposed test, although he again made no mention of what he would be testing.

That news has now been revealed by Lewis himself after he tweeted an image of his younger brother sitting in the STR Leon with the team's driver Tom Boardman watching on.

"This is my brother getting ready for his season," Hamilton wrote alongside the image above. "Be sure to follow him."

As yet, STR has yet to finalise its plans for the 2013 campaign although it has previously stated its intention to return to the World Touring Car Championship again for the year ahead.

Boardman is set to remain with the team run by his father John with Hamilton revealing that he plans to run in the ETC, which will support the WTCC meetings at Monza, the Slovakia Ring and the Salzburgring.

The series will also hold two standalone events to conclude the season, with a second event in Italy and then the season finale in the Czech Republic at Brno.
