Tom Coronel has claimed his first World Touring Car Championship win since 2013 after fighting off championship leader Jose Maria Lopez at the revised Marrakech street circuit.

The ROAL Chevrolet driver found himself inheriting the lead from Lada's Hugo Valente after he ran into the rear of reverse pole-sitter James Thompson. After Valento served his drive-through for punting Thompson off, Coronel darted into the lead but was forced to defend from Citroen's Lopez for the majority of the race.

However, with Lopez's direct title rivals on his rear he maintained the pressure on the leader but opted against a daring move in order to secure his position and extend his championship lead.

Consequently Lopez claimed a comfortable second ahead of team-mate Yvan Muller and factory Honda's Tiago Monteiro as Norbert Michelisz rounded out the top five.

Rob Huff, who will be focusing on a stronger result in the main race as he starts from pole, took a solid sixth place ahead of Lada Sport Vesta's Gabriele Tarquini with Tom Chilton, Mehdi Bennani and Fredrik Ekblom completing the points-paying positions.

In the revised top ten grid for the opening race Thompson held on to the holeshot from Valente but at turn three the Lada driver completed missed his breaking point the punted the British driver off the circuit.

The French driver was duly handed a drive-through penalty for his error while further back Thed Bjork was shuffled off the circuit which brought Lopez and Muller into the podium places behind Coronel.

Lopez measured the gap to the leader but with an eye on his championship prospects - with all his title rivals directly behind him - he played it safe to bank the points and strengthen his championship grip ahead of the feature race in Morocco.
