Marc Marquez takes pole position for the Australian MotoGP ahead of Johann Zarco and Maverick Vinales.

Marquez's title rival Andrea Dovizioso could only manage eleventh on the grid.

Valentino Rossi and Bradley Smith progressed through Qualifying 1.

Home star Jack Miller is returning to action after breaking his right tibia in a trials accident on September 29.

Good progress for aprilia,  suzuki and ktm.  They can compete in Q2  in last four races.  It is good  progress for next development..

Hope so..

Pole Pole... great ride Marc... Great ride from Zohan and Vinales... Vinales finally can have some smile on his face... MM93 & MV25 2nd time 1 & 2... but Dovi 11th... Race will be interesting...But Dovi can fight back less than 4 or 5 laps into the race...KTM impressive... Suzuki getting something close to top...

Good strategy by Marquez, he wait until no trafic for fight pole...

Did anyone catch the gesture between teammates MM & DP afterwards doing their practice starts?  MM nudged DP and DP just shook his head like he was speechless as to his performance, dead last 12th.

It would appear that those two teams within HRC don't share data.  How could two top alien riders be consistently that far apart?  One has the world by the tail and the other gets embarrassed almost regularly, by contrast.

If it rains during tomorrow's race I could see Dani pulling into the pits for the second race in a row.  I can imagine he has to be depressed about the whole thing.

Pedrosa shouldn't be in a top team anymore. Alien status revoked.

Dani has 170 points and is in 4th place in the championship. So who better could replace him - Dovi, Vinales or Marquez? They're the only ones to have done better this year, after all.

There's no guarantee Dovi will come through the pack: he's top Ducati, maybe they will all struggle in the race too.

Don't know why Dani was weak even in Dry tarmac...because Dani is an outstanding rider... even after such vast experience on the same bike, he's not able to manage the pace... and falling behind new arrivals like Stoner and Marquez. May be his weight pulling him from top...

I think Rossi feeling his age or he still need some rest for his injuries...

Philip Island is a scary fast track - not for faint hearted!
