Haas Formula 1 team boss Guenther Steiner says he will not ‘fall into an emotional trap’ and allow Romain Grosjean’s points-scoring finish at the Eifel Grand Prix to influence its 2021 driver line-up.

Grosjean finished ninth to score his first points of the season and deliver Haas just its second top-10 appearance of 2020, having pulled off a one-stop strategy with a battling drive despite fearing he had broken his finger.

The result at the Nurburgring helped Haas close the gap to eight-placed Alfa Romeo in the constructors’ championship to just two points with six races remaining.

But Steiner insisted he would not allow himself to get carried away by the result as Haas continues to evaluate its driver options for next season, with the likes of Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg, Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher all linked with the US outfit.

"We cannot be this emotional, that we can go from race to race and decide on and off, you know,” Steiner explained.

"As I always said, it's a decision for the long term, not for the short term. And I don't want to fall into that trap.

"I stay very stable on that one. It's what I always said: we want to evaluate how can the team perform, or how we think the team will perform best, with which drivers in the next two to three, four years.”

Prior to Grosjean’s P9 finish, Haas had not scored points since Kevin Magnussen took 10th place in July’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Asked how pivotal the result was for Haas, Steiner replied:  “Very important!

“It’s not only important for the points in the standings because we move one point closer to Alfa Romeo but it’s mainly for the guys, for everybody, a good feeling, how it feels to get them.

“It keeps everybody motivated and I think they all did a good job over the weekend.”
