2025 F1 Mexico City Grand Prix Qualifying - As it happened

All attention now turns to race day and a gruelling 71 laps of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Much to mull over for championship leader Oscar Piastri as his points' advantage over Lando Norris looks seriously under threat from the fourth row of the grid.

But they don't give out points for qualifying, it's Sunday that matters

"I'm really, really happy. I am honoured to be up here, it's an amazing feeling - it's the first time we have had two Ferrari drivers up here. The team deserve it, they have been working really hard, just super grateful for continuing to push and not give up.

"We haven't moved the car forward in development, but we have extracted more from it and that is what you're seeing this weekend."

"I'm pretty happy with the job we've done, I don't think there is much more in the car, but I am happy with today's performance."

On Mexico being scene of Ferrari's most recent win: "It would mean a lot [to win again], we will do everything we can to get first place in the first corner and then see what's possible."

"I am happy to be back on pole, it has actually been a long time. A good feeling. The lap was one of those laps where you don't know what happened, it felt decent but when I went across the line I was pleasantly surprised by the time. 

"I have been feeling good this weekend, I was a bit nervous of the Ferraris at the end, but we pulled it out of the bag."

Is the Mexico City Grand Prix shaping up to be a pivotal moment in the 2025 F1 title race?

Lando Norris looks on rails as he comfortably dismisses the opposition en route to pole position.

By contrast, Max Verstappen's Red Bull looks nervous in the fast corners as he settles for fifth, while Oscar Piastri's eventual eighth place is approximately where he has muddled all weekend.

Long way to go for the Aussie tomorrow to make up ground, but it's worth pointing out that there is a big difference in points between first and eighth - enough to swing the championship lead

Even better for Norris in his title bid, Verstappen is left fifth as Leclerc, Hamilton and Russell slots in between himself and pole position.

Oscar Piastri first of the big hitters to go... if the Australian has something in hand, he needs to show it now.

Piastri completes the lap and moves to third.

The final ten venture onto track for the crucial final flyer - Piastri will get to come around before Norris, but the Ferraris are going last of all

That lap of 1m 15.991s is a full seven tenths quicker than Leclerc's erstwhile personal best lap. 

Is Leclerc about to spoil Norris' party?

Norris sets a 1m 16.170s with his first flying lap - three tenths quicker than Verstappen and Piastri, who fill positions two and three

Everyone is quickly out on track with Verstappen first to cross the timing beam to start the first flying lap

Shout out to Oliver Bearman - that's the third GP in succession that he has cracked the Top 10

Lando Norris looks odds-on for pole position in Mexico as he tops Q2 by three tenths over Lewis Hamilton, with George Russell and Max Verstappen chasing them.

Oscar Piastri still looks adrift of where he needs to be down in seventh place but at least has another chance to make a difference.

Two McLarens, two Ferraris, two Mercedes' through, plus Red Bull's Verstappen, Haas' Bearman, Racing Bulls' Hadjar and Williams' Sainz (who has a five-place grid penalty)
