F1 Chinese GP sprint race and qualifying as it happened

Live text coverage of the sprint race and qualifying at the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix

KEY MOMENTS

  • Antonelli takes pole for Chinese GP
  • Russell second after car issues
  • Red Bull makes huge car changes for qualifying
  • Racing Bulls, Colapinto, Audi, Ocon out of Q2
  • Aston Martin, Cadillac, Williams out in Q1

The 2026 Formula 1 season continues this weekend with the Chinese Grand Prix, which marks the first of six sprint events this year.

F1's new era began just a few days ago at the Australian Grand Prix, as the series' radical new cars split opinion among drivers and fans.

Mercedes led the field across the weekend, with George Russell topping all three qualifying segments, before leading home a team 1-2 ahead of Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Russell leads the drivers' standings coming into this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix, while Mercedes came away with full points in the constructors' championship in Australia.

This weekend's Chinese Grand Prix will see the teams' understanding of their new cars tested to the absolute limit, with the sprint format meaning they will have just one practice session to get on top of things before launching straight into sprint qualifying.

The Chinese Grand Prix is also set to offer a different view of what the new cars might be capable of, with the maximum allowed 9MJ of battery recharge allowed.

This, coupled with the layout of the track, sees F1 go from one of its most energy-hungry tracks to one of its least.

Mercedes underlined its supremacy on Friday in China as Russell led another dominant Silver Arrows 1-2 in qualifying for the sprint race.

Lando Norris was the nearest non-Mercedes driver in third, but the reigning world champion was over six tenths adrift of Russell's time, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were split by the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

Red Bull endured a tough sprint qualifying, with Max Verstappen only eighth and a whopping 1.7 seconds off the pace.

Aston Martin's problems were a major talking point in Australia, and there looks to be no immediate end in sight to these as it remains limited on batteries.

Hamilton downbeat: "I was in the lead, finished third, not the greatest"

"Mega job, it is amazing, a big thank you for the team for us to be fighting Mercedes at the front. It was a close battle at beginning, their speed on the straight is a bit too much at the moment, I put up a good fight but killed my front tyre.

On his affinity with the new regs: "It is just a much better car, much better design and I have been part of developing it. So I much happier in it. I was in the lead at one point and I finished third, so not the greatest. I will try harder tomorrow."

03:53
'Fighting (with Hamilton) made me lose time..." - Leclerc

"I was managing quite a bit but I am happy with the race, I think the pace was quite strong, I had a bit of fighting which made me lose time to George and then it was difficult to catch up but it is good to see our race pace is more similar to Mercedes than our qualifying pace. Happy with the car today.

On pre-restart wheelspin: "I think the tyres were a bit colder than expected, I saw George having a snap so I thought this was my opportunity to take the lead, so I tried to go more aggressive but I had the same grip so I nearly lost it."

03:51

Russell ahead of GP qualifying: "I hope we can bring more, yesterday was a great day. Ferrari seem to be offset in qualifying but really close to us in race trim, so we probably need to find an improvement for the race."

03:50
"Pretty fun, lots of strategy, not easy" - Russell

"It was pretty fun in the end, lots of strategy at play on how to do the overtakes. It is not easy, I hope it was a fun race to watch... usually the sprint races are pretty boring.

"I got everything under control, then the safety car, so really happy to get the win.

"It is really windy at the moment, it's not easy because this first corner is so long, so it only takes one lap of pushing too much and you can destroy your front-left tyre, so it was just managing it. When we were battling, Lewis did an amazing job and caught me off guard. He has experience, I have a little bit to learn."

03:42

McLaren pushing to the maximum but it's only enough for fourth and sixth.

Top job by Lawson to score from 13th on the grid after a savvy hard tyre choice

03:42

Aaaaaand breathe...

Plenty of action, if occasionally hard to follow with the pendulous boost swings between the drivers.

To recap, Russell and Hamilton duke it out for the lead during the early stages with multiple changes of position before the Mercedes gets the break.

Leclerc quickly pounces on Hamilton and gives chase, but despite getting a second chance with a late safety car, can't wrest the lead from his rival.

Antonelli goes from second to seventh at the start, lands a ten-second penalty, fights back to second, takes penalty during pit-stop to drop back to eighth before recovering to fifth.

George Russell wins Chinese GP Sprint

Russell keeps his nerve to take victory in the Chinese GP Sprint Race

Leclerc chases him across the line in second, Hamilton completes the podium.

Norris fourth, Antonelli fifth, Piastri sixth, Lawson seventh, Bearman eighth

03:37
FINAL LAP

Verstappen is running out of time to get into the points, but he is up to ninth coming into the final lap.

It's not beyond him, Bearman +1.5s ahead is struggling on old tyres

03:36

Piastri is told to hand fifth place to Antonelli after apparently overtaking before the finish line on the restart

Good job Antonelli cleared Lawson and Bearman when the call came.

Piastri complies, Antonelli up to fifth

03:35
18/19

Hamilton saves his boost to blast past Norris for third place on the run towards Turn 1

Ferrari back to second and third

Antonelli overtakes Lawson for sixth

03:35
17/19

Piastri is making progress, dispatching of Antonelli for seventh at Turn 1, before getting by Bearman and Lawson before the lap is over

Piastri up to fifth, Antonelli gets Bearman for seventh

From Audi:

"Nico Hulkenberg suffered a technical failure during today's Sprint at the Chinese Grand Prix. The team will investigate the issue once the No.27 car is back in the garage."

03:33
17/19

Leclerc fluffs the getaway with wheelspin out of the hairpin, giving Russell a nice running restart

03:33
16/19

Three lap sprint incoming as the safety car prepares to come in...

Russell leads Leclerc, Norris, Hamilton and Lawson in close company

03:32

Squeaky bum time as Sainz fails to slow sufficiently as the double waved yellows come out and he is forced to dive out of the way on locked brakes into Turn 1 to avoid Ocon.

Ocon - clearly looking in his mirrors - gets straight on the radio

03:31
16/19

It should be noted that Lawson - who is on hard tyres - and Bearman on the mediums stayed out on track, so they will be fighting for their lives to keep the likes of Antonelli and Piastri behind them at the restart

We won't have many laps though...

03:29
15/19

Hamilton queuing behind Leclerc has dropped him behind Norris

The safety car-pit sequence has also hampered Piastri, who was forced to queue behind Norris before taking his tyre change

He slips to eighth, just behind Antonelli - Lawson and Bearman rise to fifth and sixth

  3. Norris
  4. Hamilton
  5. Lawson
  6. Bearman
  7. Antonelli
  8. Piastri
03:27

Antonelli takes his 10secs penalty in the pit-stop, which drops him to seventh place.

03:26
14/19 - Safety Car

Here we go, safety car called to clear Hulkenberg's stricken Audi on the outside of Turn 1

It is called just as the leaders come round to the final corner - so everyone dives for the pit-lane

03:25
13/19

And just like that, we now have our second AND third DNF - Bottas pitting, Hulkenberg stopped on track

Yellow flags

03:24
12/19 - Lindblad retires

Lindblad becomes the first DNF of the race as he enters the pit lane to retire

The Briton suffered a spin at Turn 11 on lap one and had been running at the back

03:23
12/19

Antonelli picks off Hamilton down the back straight and retains enough boost in reserve to resist the Briton on the ensuing home straight

11/19

Further back, the final two points paying positions belong to Lawson and Bearman.

Credit to Lawson, he started 13th and took a punt on hard tyres, and he has simply picked his way up the order into the points.

Bearman holds a decent lead of Hadjar, whose softs will likely be suffering about now

03:21
11/19

Interestingly, Verstappen is still wedged in 13th place, which is where he has been for much of this race.

The Dutchman failed to get off the line well from eighth place on the grid, but having been dumped well outside the points, hasn't made any progress on Bortoleto in front of him
