F1 Chinese GP sprint race and qualifying as it happened

Live text coverage of the sprint race and qualifying at the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix

KEY MOMENTS

  • Antonelli takes pole for Chinese GP
  • Russell second after car issues
  • Red Bull makes huge car changes for qualifying
  • Racing Bulls, Colapinto, Audi, Ocon out of Q2
  • Aston Martin, Cadillac, Williams out in Q1

The 2026 Formula 1 season continues this weekend with the Chinese Grand Prix, which marks the first of six sprint events this year.

F1's new era began just a few days ago at the Australian Grand Prix, as the series' radical new cars split opinion among drivers and fans.

Mercedes led the field across the weekend, with George Russell topping all three qualifying segments, before leading home a team 1-2 ahead of Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Russell leads the drivers' standings coming into this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix, while Mercedes came away with full points in the constructors' championship in Australia.

This weekend's Chinese Grand Prix will see the teams' understanding of their new cars tested to the absolute limit, with the sprint format meaning they will have just one practice session to get on top of things before launching straight into sprint qualifying.

The Chinese Grand Prix is also set to offer a different view of what the new cars might be capable of, with the maximum allowed 9MJ of battery recharge allowed.

This, coupled with the layout of the track, sees F1 go from one of its most energy-hungry tracks to one of its least.

Mercedes underlined its supremacy on Friday in China as Russell led another dominant Silver Arrows 1-2 in qualifying for the sprint race.

Lando Norris was the nearest non-Mercedes driver in third, but the reigning world champion was over six tenths adrift of Russell's time, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were split by the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

Red Bull endured a tough sprint qualifying, with Max Verstappen only eighth and a whopping 1.7 seconds off the pace.

Aston Martin's problems were a major talking point in Australia, and there looks to be no immediate end in sight to these as it remains limited on batteries.

If you did happen to catch sprint qualifying as it happened yesterday, you will have seen some waved arms over Norris being held up by Antonelli.

The Italian was exiting the pits and touring on the inside line just as Norris was coming across to hit the apex of Turn 1. Norris backed out, got on the radio and the grabbed the attention of the stewards.

However, stewards would decline to penalise Antonelli - who starts second - because Norris was on a pre-push lap, rather than a full time attack.

So, as you were, boys!

ICYMI: Bahrain and Saudi Arabia GPs set to be cancelled

An important development coming into the weekend is the likely cancellation of the Bahrain GP and Saudi Arabia GP - rounds four and five - due to uncertainty in the Middle East triggered by the ongoing Iran War.

The events won't be replaced or rescheduled due to the dense nature of the schedule already, so it looks like we're heading for a 22-round season, instead of 24.

While there hasn't been much time to readjust from Australia, it would seem McLaren looks more in the mix this weekend than they were in Melbourne with Lando Norris starting third. Oscar Piastri starts fifth and will no doubt be itching to get off the line to firmly put last weekend's disaster - when he crashed on the sighting lap before his home race - to the back of his mind.

Red Bull, meanwhile, reasserted its status as one of the perceived 'big four' but Verstappen in eighth and Hadjar tenth leaves it with some work to do.

Amid them will be Pierre Gasly, whose strong effort put Alpine seventh on the grid, while Oliver Bearman was typically solid again in ninth.

A year ago it was, of course, Lewis Hamilton reigning supreme in the sprint race. At the time it seemed the seven-time F1 World Champion was on the cusp of something exciting right at the start of his Ferrari tenure, but it would prove the scant highlight of disappointing year.

However, though he starts from fourth today, there is the sense he is in a better place this year... and, let's face it, a happy Hamilton is a fast Hamilton

As we say, Mercedes once again flexed its muscles in sprint qualifying to consolidate its excellent start to the season in Melbourne less than a week ago.

That's no surprise, but while Mercedes had the clear advantage in qualifying - in Australia and here in China so far - it was much closer with Ferrari come race day in Melbourne.

On that occasion some strategic fumbles took Ferrari out of contention, but there is less chance of that happening today, even if Hamilton and Leclerc have work to do from fourth and sixth.

That said, this was where they started in Melbourne too - albeit Leclerc ahead of Hamilton - but both were rapid off the line as expected (feared) so don't discount a similar situation here. With just 19 laps to count down, if Ferrari can get up there at the start, they might pose a threat

Whether you've stayed up into the wee small hours, or you're just waking up, get yourself a pot of coffee on the go and settle in for what should - at the very least - be an intriguing 19-lap dash around the Shanghai International Circuit.

George Russell starts from pole position at the head of another all-Mercedes front row that also features Kimi Antonelli as the Briton continues to make hay while the sun shines in what we now know is the car to beat in 2026

Good morning...

...good afternoon, depending on where you are in the world!

Welcome to LIVE text commentary for the Chinese Grand Prix, Round 2 of the 2026 F1 World Championship season.

Qualifying for Sunday's full-length encounter is coming up later, but before that we have the first of six super Saturday Sprint Races that will also contribute to what is set-to-become a 22-round calendar (more on that in a moment).
