F1 Belgian GP LIVE: Ferrari race to fix Lewis Hamilton's car for qualifying

Live coverage of Saturday at the F1 Belgian Grand Prix

KEY MOMENTS

  • Norris, Hadjar and Stroll take grid penalties
  • Red Bull ditch 'Macarena' wing after Verstappen crash
  • Verstappen fastest in FP1; Antonelli in FP2 and FP3

The tenth round of the 2026 Formula 1 season takes place at the Belgian Grand Prix.

One of the most famous tracks on the F1 calendar, Spa-Francorchamps has played host to some truly iconic moments.

As ever, teams have brought a number of updates to the track, with McLaren bringing a new rear wing to test on Friday, making use of the long Kemmel Straight for data gathering. This wing, however, is understood not to be McLaren's 'Macarena' wing, which was taken to Austria but not used.

After Max Verstappen's crash at Silverstone, Red Bull has also elected to bring a more conventional wing to Belgium. In the wake of his off, the Dutchman branded the wing "super-dangerous", with Red Bull committing to a full investigation into the underlying problem.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has warned that the Silver Arrows must fix their reliability woes, with Ferrari now breathing down the neck of points-leader Kimi Antonelli after taking two wins from the last three weekends.

Verstappen initially led the way on Friday, before Antonelli unlocked pace in his Mercedes in the second session, with it appearing as though there is little to separate the top four teams on single-lap pace.

Lando Norris, Isack Hadjar, and Lance Stroll have already had grid penalties confirmed for taking power unit components beyond the pre-set limits, with Fernando Alonso joining this number on Saturday morning.

BREAKING NEWS

A little bit of breaking news for you, as Sainz avoids a penalty for failing to slow under double waved yellows following Hamilton's crash.

The full explanation reads: "During the session Car 44 collided with the barrier at the exit of turn 13 triggering a double yellow sector from the approach to turn 12 to turn 14. Car 55 and Car 3 had both passed through this double yellow sector on the previous lap.

"Car 55 was behind Car 3 on the approach to the double yellow zone. Both cars commenced braking prior to the start of the zone but the driver of Car 3 applied more brake pressure than the driver of Car 55 had expected and as a consequence the driver of Car 55 had to take evasive action and move to the right of Car 3, locking brakes but not overtaking. Both drivers stated they were surprised, the driver of Car 3 by Car 55 closing so quickly after Car 3 had commenced braking before the zone, and the driver of Car 55 by Car 3 braking more heavily than he had anticipated.

"The relevant rules require a driver to reduce speed significantly when passing through a double waved yellow marshalling sector. Compliance with the rules does not expressly require that a significant speed reduction occur before the sector but in this case both drivers had commenced to do so, both braking approximately 80m before the start of the sector. By the time Car 55 entered the double yellow sector, it had reduced speed significantly and maintained a significantly reduced speed throughout the sector.

"The Stewards were therefore satisfied that the driver of Car 55 committed no infringement, the locking of brakes was attributable to a misunderstanding of relative braking and determined to take no further action."

Anyway, we should probably turn back to Formula 1 talk. That's what we're all here for, after all.

14:11

For anyone who is of a similar vintage to me and played TOCA Race Driver or TOCA 3, Durksen's race engineer sounds exactly the same as the race engineer on those games.

Excuse me while I dig out the PlayStation 2 and turn back time.

14:09

This rather scary spin for John Bennett was the cause of the safety car.

Durksen wins from Stenshorne and Beganovic, but will the result stand? The weaving has not even been noted yet. But it is clear that the top two were weaving.

14:06

In third, Beganovic could be on for the win here. Tsolov follows in fourth, but any further progression from the championship leader looks unlikely.

14:05

Durksen and Stenshorne were both weaving beyond Blanchimont on the restart. The cars in positions one and two will almost certainly get penalties.

Welcome back!

We're back ahead of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. The Formula 2 sprint race is coming to a close, with the safety car pulling in to allow a final-lap shootout for victory. We'll keep you up to date on that before turning back to F1, and Hamilton's rapid repair work at Ferrari.

Sainz under investigation for incident that incurred Verstappen's wrath

Carlos Sainz has been placed under investigation for allegedly failing to slow under double-waved yellow flags during final practice at Formula 1’s Belgian Grand Prix.

The incident happened in the closing moments of FP3 shortly after Lewis Hamilton crashed at Turn 13, causing significant damage to his Ferrari and leaving the team in a race against the clock to fix the car in time for qualifying.

Sainz came up fast behind Max Verstappen who was slowing for the double-waved yellow flags at the scene of Hamilton’s accident. The Williams driver locked up in his attempts to slow down after passing Verstappen and his actions did not impress the four-time world champion.

Ferrari racing to fix Hamilton's car

Ferrari face a race against time to try and fix Lewis Hamilton's car in time for qualifying after the seven-time world champion's FP3 crash.

Sky Sports F1 is reporting that Ferrari "think the car will be ready" in time for qualifying, having assessed the heavy damage to the rear of Hamilton's SF26.

12:55

And with that, it's time to take a short break, before we return about an hour before qualifying. That session is set to take place at 3pm BST, so we'll be back at 2pm BST.

Until then, have a good one!

Kimi Antonelli led the way in final practice at the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton crashed out in the closing stages.

Antonelli held the advantage that he had established in second practice on Friday, once again leading Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

Hamilton crash

You can see for yourself just how similar Hamilton's crash was to Gasly's. But with Hamilton, as he hit the kerb, the off-board angle shows how the Ferrari took off and effectively flew into the barrier. There was no chance of recovering that one.

Kimi Antonelli fastest in final F1 Belgian GP practice as Lewis Hamilton ‘destroys’ Ferrari in crash

Formula 1 championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli was once again fastest in final practice at the Belgian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton crashed.

Antonelli, who also ended Friday practice with the quickest time, was 0.139 seconds clear of McLaren’s Lando Norris, while Max Verstappen wound up third-fastest for Red Bull, 0.148s off the pace.

12:35

Huge damage, and a lunch break gone for Ferrari, as Hamilton stands the other side of the barriers, watching the field go by.

12:34

Exactly the same as Gasly, Hamilton lost the rear of his Ferrari, and slammed into the barriers at the Fagnes chicane. Again, like Gasly, the right-rear tyre has been ripped from the chassis, and this will be a race against time to get the car ready for qualifying.

There could also be a gearbox and power unit change needed, which would incur grid penalties.

12:31
Hamilton crashes

Disaster for Hamilton. He has smashed into the barriers in a mirror image of Gasly's crash yesterday.

12:30
Chequered flag in FP3

The flag falls and these will be the final times.

Leclerc improves to sixth place, one place behind Hamilton, but over three-tenths back on his team-mate.

12:27

This is very silly from some of the traditional backmarkers or midfield teams. Sainz, Gasly and Bearman all get in the way of Leclerc's latest hot lap. The Ferrari driver is forced to abort, and that could well be his session over.

12:26

'I need some slipstream, ' says Leclerc. Is Ferrari going to play some games in qualifying? We saw how badly that went in F3 earlier in the weekend, with 11 drivers being slapped with penalties for trying to sort that in an unsafe manner.

12:24

Had this been qualifying, Antonelli's time would have been deleted after exceeding track limits at the final corner heading onto his lap. Track limits will be a major talking point in the later session.

12:23

It's a slower 1m46.255s this time around. Still, that would put him clear of Russell and in third, had he not already put in his previous lap.

12:21

Antonelli's first sector is just 0.058s slower than his previous lap, so it's still strong. He's picking up speed through the middle of the lap.

12:21

After looking strong early on, Hamilton is now in seventh place with Leclerc, in the second Ferrari, in ninth. The coming laps will give a clearer picture of where the Scuderia are in the pecking order.

12:19

Antonelli aborts his lap at La Source. He missed the final gearshift into the corner, and cut his losses.
