Turn 17 is providing a significant challenge. Drivers are forced to brake while turning, and they keep locking up into the tight right-hander.
Hamilton again has been blocking, as he catches out a disgruntled Hulkenberg. Moments later, he's caught out himself by Ocon. Watch for traffic in qualifying.
10 minutes remain in FP1 as Mercedes leads with Russell at the head of a 1-2.
Max Verstappen is fifth for Red Bull, with Norris following.
At the foot of the table are the two Cadillac drivers, with Perez 4s off the pace in 21st.
Another hot lap, and another purple time for Russell with a 1m34.077s. Remarkably, there hasn't been a red flag yet, although Leclerc just gave it his best effort.
Soft tyre runs are being completed and out of nowhere, Russell has suddenly gone fastest with a 1m34.145s. Hamilton and Leclerc follow, with Antonelli fourth, but just beginning his effort.
The near miss from Ferrari a few minutes ago. A very diplomatic response from Leclerc via the radio.
Tsunoda is back in the pits with a power steering issue. Around this tight, 22-turn layout, power steering is certainly required.
The track has finally emptied a little, with the mechanics now getting to work with setup changes.
The top 10 halfway through FP1 is:
- Hamilton
- Leclerc
- Antonelli
- Lawson
- Lindblad
- Verstappen
- Russell
- Hulkenberg
- Norris
- Bortoleto
A 1m34.865s moves Antonelli up to third place, and the tyres are crying enough for most drivers.
A very nasty moment for Ferrari, as Hamilton was dawdling in the middle of the track as Leclerc came steaming up behind him. Yet another example of horrible communication for Ferrari.
Russell is bouncing hard over the kerbs but is unable to find pace anywhere close to Antonelli or the Ferraris. He's over a second off the pace in eighth place.
Looking at the foot of the order, it's another tough, tough session for Williams. Sainz and Albon are both in the bottom three, with the Cadillac drivers sandwiching them. At present, Sainz, in the faster car, is 4.5s off the pace. A special livery, yes, but special performance, not at all.
Not what Ferrari would have wanted after the disaster of last weekend; Leclerc has just gone faster than Hamilton at the top of the times. Some space between the pair would have been on the desired menu for the weekend. A 1m34.683s puts Leclerc just over a tenth clear of Hamilton.
A very on-the-limit effort for Hamilton as he puts in a 1m34.803s. We're around 10s clear of those first efforts, which shows how much learning was done on those first tours.
Verstappen is currently in third place, and Red Bull are definitely enjoying the view on the track.
Thoughts on a postcard; what do we think of the Madring? Initial impressions here are that the facility might be great, but the track is lacking...a lot.
Hamtilon comes very close to collecting Stroll on his latest hot lap. A 1m35.563s is the new session best.
Hamilton is beginning to get the rear of his Ferrari loose as he pushes the limits. A 1m36.066s is the new target. Norris, Antonelli and Piastri follow.
Russell in 11th is taking a little longer to get up to speed.
Ocon has reported that the grip seems to be ok already, which is somewhat of a surprise. Antonelli lowers the marker to a 1m37.294s. As the times fall, the risks increase.
Things we like to see; cars out on track for the first time in Madrid.
Hamilton has gone fastest now, lowering the benchmark to 1m39.431s. Lawson, Piastri and Bortoleto follow, but expect this order to shift by the moment.
Ocon begins things with a 1m44.336s, before Bearman and Alonso go faster.
Russell's opener is a very steady lap.
"Box for a steering wheel change," Perez is told by Cadillac. He's back in the garage after just a few minutes.
Only Hulkenberg and Colapinto have remained in the garage so far, and drivers are instantly going onto hot laps. No installation laps here today!
Also out early are Bearman, Russell, Sainz, Alonso, Tsunoda, Stroll, Albon and...yeah, you get it. Pretty much everyone is coming out instantly for an early look at the all-new track.
