F1: Lewis Hamilton joins consortium bidding to buy Chelsea

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time F1 world champion, has joined one of the consortiums bidding to become the new owners of Chelsea FC.

The seven-time F1 world champion and tennis superstar Serena Williams will pledge £10m each to the takeover bid led by Sir Martin Broughton, the former Liverpool FC and British Airways chairman, Sky News have reported.

Hamilton, a lifelong Arsenal fan, is a surprise addition to the consortium although he has become an established investor in recent years.

How will F1 great Hamilton be involved with buying Chelsea?

Sky News have reported a source which calls Hamilton and Williams' involvement "a serious investment decision because of their experience at building global sports brands".

They were enticed to pledge their own money due to "the diversity of its roster of global investors", Sky News' source added.

Hamilton could play a formal role within Chelsea promoting diversity, equality and inclusion, the report states.

The consortium that Hamilton has joined is one of three prospective buyers of the football club which Roman Abramovich has owned for nearly 20 years.
