Ferrari to keep Salo - and Barrichello.

Ferrari is said to be considering both Rubens Barrichello and Mika Salo for next season - as well as retaining the services of Michael Schumacher.

The Italian team, mindful of the effects Schumacher's Silverstone accident may have in the future, is thought to have offered terms to both its current stand-in, and the man it is courting to replace Eddie Irvine in 2000. Barrichello is known to have signed a letter intent to join the team next season, but other sources suggest that Salo, too, has been asked to stay with the team.

The decision, if it has been taken, will provide an insurance should Schumacher decide that he has lost the will to race, following the accident which broke his right leg at the British Grand Prix. Salo admitted before the Hungarian round last weekend that he was due to sign an agreement with an unnamed team, in case he should "screw it all up" after a good performance at Hockenheim. This was widely expected to be with either Sauber or, more likely, Stewart, but nothing has yet been revealed.

Neither driver will confirm that he is driving for the Scuderia next season.
