Limping Schumacher Returns.

Michael Schumacher returned to the cockpit of his Ferrari today, completing several exploratory laps of the Mugello circuit.

The German joined current race drivers Eddie Irvine and Mika Salo at the Italian circuit, completing around twenty laps before the serious business of testing resumed. Schumacher's best lap - a 1min 28.720secs - compared favourably with times set by his team-mates yesterday [Thursday], but it was noticeable that he had to be helped into and out of the car.

Because of this, it is unlikely that Schumacher will be able to make his comeback at the Belgian Grand Prix - as has been suggested following the news that he was to test today. The FIA maintains that a driver must be able to exit his car in a matter of seconds, and Schumacher - who is walking with a pronounced limp - is currently unable to fulfil this requirement.

Both team and driver insist that the Italian Grand Prix in September is a more likely date for his return.
