It was first presented by the Hawthorn family in memory of Mike Hawthorn, who became Britain's first ever Formula One World Champion in 1958 (driving for Ferrari) but tragically died in 1959.

McLaren Mercedes driver Coulthard finished fifth in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship in 2002 and receives the prestigious award for the fourth time, joining distinguished four-time winners Sir Jackie Stewart and Damon Hill.

Presenting the trophy at Silverstone was Colin Hilton, Chief Executive of the Motor Sports Association (MSA), the national governing body of motor sport in the UK.

"It's a great pleasure to present this award to David," commented Hilton. "Not only has he been one of the most consistent and successful drivers in recent years, but he has also been a great ambassador for his sport and his country. His career is a shining example of how young drivers can work their way through the sport to reach the very top."
