The inaugural 250cc Indianapolis Grand Prix was first delayed and then cancelled due to appalling weather on Sunday.

The edge of Hurricane Ike arrived at Indy just before the planned 250cc start, prompting race officials to delay the event until after the MotoGP race.

However, high winds and heavy rain caused the premier-class race to be halted seven laps from the finish, and - with even worse weather expected - the quarter-litre race was confirmed as cancelled soon after.

The next round of the 250cc series will be held at Motegi, Japan, on September 28th.
