WTCC: Zanardi crowned Italian champion.

Only two weeks after taking his maiden victory in the FIA World Touring Car Championship at Oschersleben, Alex Zanardi has secured the Italian Superturismo Championship title after a double victory at Varano.

At the wheel of his BMW 320i run by ROAL Motorsport and backed by BMW Italy, Zanardi had set pole position in Saturday's qualifying, with a lap in 1min 11.443secs, three tenths of a second faster than Salvatore Tavano, before beating the Alfa Romeo driver by a comfortable margin in the opening race of the weekend.

Zanardi then took the spoils in race two ahead of Tavano's team-mate Andrea Larini while Stefano Valli completed the podium.

With the Italian title wrapped up, Zanardi can now switch his focus back to the WTCC, which heads to Istanbul this coming weekend for the eighth meeting of the year.
