Mercedes pips McLaren on day two of Bahrain F1 test, Aston breaks down

Another rocket launch from Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari, who gets the jump on four cars ahead of him during the end-of-day practice start to snatch the lead from Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli into Turn 1.
That's two out of two great starts from Hamilton. The Ferrari looks very strong off the line.
The chequered flag is out and that is the end of running on the penultimate day of 2026 F1 pre-season testing in Bahrain, with Kimi Antonelli setting the pace.
There is a genuine track hazard late in the day, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri pulling off down one of the escape road at Turn 1.
Another personal best lap from Lewis Hamilton, who moves up to fourth with a 1m33.408s. That puts the seven-time world champion 0.605s off Kimi Antonelli.
Lewis Hamilton does now mange to get a clean run in as he closes to within 0.886s of Kimi Antonelli's benchmark on the C3 tyre.
Franco Colapinto goes sixth for Alpine.
Lewis Hamilton returns to the pits after a failed attempt to improve his lap time.
The seven-time world champion was nearly half a second down after the first two sectors but bailed into the pits after running deep into the final corner, ruining his latest effort on C3 tyres.
Esteban Ocon uses the C4 compound to put his Haas eighth in the timesheet with a 1m34.201s.
Oscar Piastri conducts a practice pit stop. This was one of the rare weaknesses of McLaren at times last season.

Plenty of improvements in what has become dubbed as 'power hour' by ex-F1 driver Jolyon Palmer.
Alex Albon, on a set of C5 soft tyres, goes eighth quickest, ahead of Franco Colapinto who also posted a personal best lap for Alpine.
Liam Lawson is another to improve, going 11th in his Racing Bulls.
Lewis Hamilton improves on his best time with a 1m33.928s to go fifth-fastest in his Ferrari.
That's still a long way of Kimi Antonelli's overall quickest time.
We are seeing more pace from Mercedes as Kimi Antonelli stretches the W17's legs with a 1m32.803s to set a new fastest time of the day.
Antonelli beats Oscar Piastri's previous benchmark by just 0.058s.
Lewis Hamilton has been back in the pits with his long run seemingly cut short due to a minor issue.
Ferrari mechanics were seen working on the rear of Hamilton's car in the garage but the SF-26 is being prepared to head back out.
Now into the final hour on Hamilton's last day in the Ferrari, will we see a fast run from the seven-time world champion?

This is another strong long run from Lewis Hamilton, who has been consistently lapping in the 1m36s on C2 hard tyres.
Hamilton was quickest in the race simulations during the first Bahrain test, with Ferrari's high-fuel performance catching the eye of its rivals.
Aston Martin has confirmed it was a power unit problem that caused Fernando Alonso's stoppage that brought out a red flag earlier on.
Work is going on behind the screens in the Aston Martin garage and there are no team members on the pit wall. With an hour and 20 minutes remaining on the clock, it is unlikely we will see Aston Martin back out on track today...

Lewis Hamilton is doing some faster laps, with two improvements on near consecutive laps.
It's not enough to move the Ferrari driver up from P12, and he remains more than three seconds off the pace.
Lewis Hamilton has just gone wheel-to-wheel with McLaren's Oscar Piastri.
Both drivers are on race runs but Hamilton used the most of his fresher tyres to get by Piastri with a relatively easy overtake on the run to Turn 11, having caught up to the Australian's gearbox in the first sector.
Lewis Hamilton is the latest driver to improve as he goes 12th with a 1m36.578s on his 54th lap of the day.
The seven-time world champion is making up for lost time this morning but we would expect to see Hamilton doing some performance running before the end of the session.

Franco Colapinto finds decent improvement on the C3 tyres to lift his Alpine up three places to seventh with a 1m34.622s.
Pacesetter Oscar Piastri has just been practicing some starts and has logged 33 laps in his McLaren since taking over from teammate Lando Norris.
