F1 Chinese GP as it happened

Lap-by-lap coverage of the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix

KEY MOMENTS

  • Antonelli leads Mercedes 1-2 for maiden F1 win
  • Both McLarens did not start
  • Verstappen forced out with tech issues
  • Stroll stoppage brings out safety car on lap 10
  • Bortoleto, Albon non-starters with hydraulics issue

The 2026 Formula 1 season continues this weekend with the 56-lap Chinese Grand Prix.

Kimi Antonelli won out in qualifying, taking pole position after his Mercedes team-mate George Russell suffered a reliability issue when exiting the pits in Q3. However, Russell was able to return to the action, and put his Mercedes second on the grid.

Ferrari pair Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc start on the second row, and will hope to replicate their starts so far this term to jump into an early lead.

Continuing the two-by-two theme, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris complete the third row for McLaren. Pierre Gasly is seventh for Alpine, followed by Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, with Ollie Bearman rounding out the top 10 for Haas.

The race takes place under somewhat of a cloud, after F1 finally confirmed it will not race in either Bahrain or Saudi Arabia in April. This means that there will be a five-week break following the Japanese Grand Prix at the end of March, to the Miami Grand Prix in May. Given the proximity to the current conflict in Iran, there remain questions over future events, including the Azerbaijan, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi weekends.

Aston Martin is aiming to run the Chinese Grand Prix as a regular race this weekend, as opposed to how it ran the Australian race as a glorified test session, with multiple prolonged stops in the garage for both its drivers.

2026 F1 Chinese Grand Prix Saturday schedule

Grand Prix - 7:00am - 9:00am GMT

15 Mar 2026
07:34
16/56

Hamilton is hunting down Antonelli, bringing the gap down to less than a second.

Leclerc has a two second gap up to Hamilton

Russell is past Colapinto into fourth place, while Bearman is through on Lindblad for seventh

07:33
16/56

Colapinto is working hard to keep Leclerc behind him but has to cede third to the Ferrari coming round on the exit of Turn 3

Russell is feeling his way back into this race - he passes Ocon for fifth

07:32
15/56

Further back, Gasly has lost some ground on the restart - Bearman and Hulkenberg are both through into eighth and ninth

07:31

Hamilton gets the move done on Colapinto on the switch-back into Turn 9, returns to second.

He is just over a second behind Antonelli.

Russell complains of having no grip on his Mercedes

07:31
15/56

Leclerc has also pounced on Russell for fifth (third) on the run to Turn 1

Colapinto is proving a stubborn customer for Hamilton

07:30
15/56

Hamilton squeezes under Ocon at Turn 14 to move into third place

Antonelli pulls a 1.2s lead over Colapinto on that lap

07:30
14/56

Russell is wide at Turn 6 after a lock-up, Hamilton pounces to move into a de facto second (fourth on the road)

07:29
14/56

Antonelli is a bit wild out of the final corner, but gets the jump on Colapinto, who has Ocon all over him.

Russell and Hamilton will have to be cautious trying to vault them.

07:28
14/56 - Green flag

Off we go, let's get racing again.

07:28
13/56 - Safety car

While we take a breather, let's highlight some other notable performers in this race of attrition so far

Alpine... Gasly and Colapinto ran a comfortable fifth and sixth prior to the safety car. The team is showing glimmers of promise with its new Mercedes architecture, it's certainly proving more reliable than over at McLaren.

Colapinto stayed out so runs second here for now - are his first points as an Alpine driver in the offing today?

07:24
12/56 - Safety car

So a bit of a shake up there as some drivers take the opportunity of a safety car for pit-stops and some don't.

  1. Antonelli
  2. Colapinto (not stopped)
  3. Ocon (not stopped)
  4. Russell
  5. Hamilton
  6. Lindblad (not stopped)
  7. Leclerc
  8. Hulkenberg (not stopped)
  9. Gasly
  10. Bearman
  11. Alonso (not stopped)
  12. Perez (not stopped)

Another bad day at the office for Aston Martin and Lance Stroll.

11/56 - Safety car

Antonelli is in and out, holds onto the lead from Colapinto and Ocon, who didn't pit.

Russell gets out just in front of Hamilton, despite a brief double-stack.

07:21
10/56 - Safety Car

The safety car is out after Lance Stroll brings his Aston Martin to a stop on the outside of Turn 1 with technical issues

Everyone dives for the pit-lane...

07:21

From McLaren:

"Unfortunately, we identified separate issues on both cars, which prevented them from starting the Chinese GP, with Oscar's being removed from the grid shortly before the formation lap. We will now work to identify each issue."

07:20
10/56

McLaren confirms two different electrical issues for Norris and Piastri - related to the power unit but not the same issue itself.

Dark days for McLaren

07:20
10/56

Lawson (medium) and Verstappen (soft) dive for an early pit-stop

07:19
9/56

The Racing Bulls are getting frisky in their battle for eighth - Lindblad passes via a lock up that sends him wide, prompting Lawson on the medium tyres to re-take the place.

Lawson gets on the radio to complain, but the rookie gets the job done on the following lap

07:18
9/56

It should be noted that Verstappen started this race on the soft tyres, which makes his terrible start - and a brief trip across the run-off later in the race - all the more painful.

Meanwhile, Colapinto, Ocon and Lindblad are on hard tyres in sixth, seventh and ninth

07:17
8/56

The other two drivers failing to make it out were Albon, due to hydraulic issues, and Bortoleto, who - like Piastri - failed to get away for the warm-up lap.

07:16
8/56

Four drivers are already out of this race but that's because they didn't start.

They include BOTH McLarens - Norris never made it out for his sighting lap due to technical issues, before Piastri was wheeled off the grid before the warm-up lap.

A disaster for the title-winning team and especially Piastri, who hasn't started either GP this year

07:15
7/56

Antonelli leads Russell by 1.3s, Hamilton is clinging on just half a second adrift of in third place.

  1. Antonelli
  2. Russell
  3. Hamilton
  4. Leclerc
  5. Gasly
  6. Colapinto
  7. Ocon
  8. Lawson
  9. Lindblad
  10. Verstappen
07:14
6/56

Hadjar was partially responsible for his own demise, the Frenchman having been forced onto the dirty run-off by a firm but fair move by Bearman at Turn 11 on lap one.

Hadjar keeps his foot in for the inside line at Turn 12, but turns around, forcing Bearman caught on the outside to run well wide in avoidance

07:13
6/56

Replays show Verstappen bogs down off the line once again, plummeting him down the order - he is making gains back up the order though.

07:12
5/56

Things are settling down a bit at the front - Antonelli leads Russell by just under a second.

Hamilton is trying to cling onto Russell but is now a second adrift after being overtaken the previous lap. Leclerc is closing on his team-mate.

Great job by Gasly, he is just a couple of seconds off this lead group
