F1 Chinese GP as it happened

Lap-by-lap coverage of the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix

KEY MOMENTS

  • Antonelli leads Mercedes 1-2 for maiden F1 win
  • Both McLarens did not start
  • Verstappen forced out with tech issues
  • Stroll stoppage brings out safety car on lap 10
  • Bortoleto, Albon non-starters with hydraulics issue

The 2026 Formula 1 season continues this weekend with the 56-lap Chinese Grand Prix.

Kimi Antonelli won out in qualifying, taking pole position after his Mercedes team-mate George Russell suffered a reliability issue when exiting the pits in Q3. However, Russell was able to return to the action, and put his Mercedes second on the grid.

Ferrari pair Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc start on the second row, and will hope to replicate their starts so far this term to jump into an early lead.

Continuing the two-by-two theme, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris complete the third row for McLaren. Pierre Gasly is seventh for Alpine, followed by Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, with Ollie Bearman rounding out the top 10 for Haas.

The race takes place under somewhat of a cloud, after F1 finally confirmed it will not race in either Bahrain or Saudi Arabia in April. This means that there will be a five-week break following the Japanese Grand Prix at the end of March, to the Miami Grand Prix in May. Given the proximity to the current conflict in Iran, there remain questions over future events, including the Azerbaijan, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi weekends.

Aston Martin is aiming to run the Chinese Grand Prix as a regular race this weekend, as opposed to how it ran the Australian race as a glorified test session, with multiple prolonged stops in the garage for both its drivers.

Chinese GP is...

GO!

07:03

Sounds like a different issue for Piastri than Norris, but no info from McLaren yet.

Warm-up lap underway

The remaining cars are on their way for the formation lap.... 59 laps incoming

06:59

Sounds like a similar issue for Piastri that team-mate Norris has been battling this morning.

Double whammy for McLaren - both cars off the grid just moments before this race gets underway.

Leaves a big old gap on row three...

Piastri is not the only one, Bortoleto is also being wheeled off the grid.

At least four cars won't get off the grid with Norris, Piastri, Bortoleto and Albon not taking their starting position

06:56
BREAKING: Piastri wheeled off grid

More drama for McLaren!

Oscar Piastri is now being wheeled off the grid.

06:55

Bit of pressure on Antonelli coming into this one - he has made poor starts on both occasions this year and been forced to fight his way back to the sharp end.

Because of that, if he does get away well this time, he'll be mired in the battle at the front for the first time in these new cars - and we have all seen how hectic that can be!

06:49

More pre-race woe for McLaren after Piastri failed to make the start of the Australian GP when he spun and punched the wall in Albert Park.

There is zero movement around Norris' empty grid slot and it's not clear if he will make it out at all.

While this is good news for Mercedes in a racing context, if it's another power unit-related issue then it will give them something to think about coming into this event.

Norris, who had been due to start from sixth place, is set to start from the pit-lane at best after failing to make it on the grid for the sighting lap.

McLaren is tight-lipped as to why or what happens next... a crucial 20 minutes for McLaren

06:37

Mercedes head into the race as comfortable favourites having broadly dominated proceedings in Australia and in China thus far.

However, Ferrari has shown on both occasions that it has the performance to keep Mercedes honest in a straight battle, if not in qualifying or in clear air.

Both Hamilton and Leclerc are better placed on the grid and - with their seemingly superior start procedures - are expected to take up the baton early on.

Also, Mercedes might feel a little vulnerable following a litany of technical issues that impacted Russell in qualifying. Though he was able to get back out and rescue a front row start, he won't have that kind of luxury in the race if gremlins return.

BREAKING: Pitlane start for Lando Norris

Lando Norris has not made it out of his garage to the grid due to ongoing issues.

If he does start, he will start from pitlane.

Bahrain and Saudi Arabia GPs cancelled

Before we turn our attention to the big event, some news to bring you up to date with.

As expected, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs - which were due to host Rounds 4 and 5 of the season - have been cancelled amid ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East due to the Iran conflict.

This had been mooted for some days, but it was formally confirmed that not only will both be cancelled, they won't be rescheduled or replaced on the schedule.

It brings the number of events this season down from 24 to 22, and means a five-week gap between Round 3 in Japan and the next event in Miami.
