2025 Catalan MotoGP: Friday practice updates LIVE!

Live text coverage of Friday practice from the 2025 MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix

MotoGP makes its third visit to Spain this weekend, with the 15th round of the 2025 campaign taking place at the Catalan Grand Prix.

Effectively MotoGP's home race, Barcelona has been the scene of many iconic moments over the years, such as the 2009 duel between Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, and Jorge Martin's historic world title last season.

Marc Marquez returns to home soil with a massive 175-point lead in the championship following his seventh double victory in a row last time out at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

And now he stands very much on the edge of winning his seventh premier class title. If he can outscore Alex Marquez by at least 10 points this weekend, he will go to next week's San Marino Grand Prix with his first shot at putting this championship to bed.

But the elder Marquez brother considers this to be one of his weakest tracks, with the Ducati rider victorious only twice in MotoGP at Barcelona. Still, last year at both races held at the circuit he scored a brace of podium finishes.

Alex Marquez enjoyed a strong Barcelona test last November on the GP24 and will be hoping to conjure up that form again to overturn his recent skid.

Last year's Barcelona winner Pecco Bagnaia comes to this weekend in a more buoyant mood having felt like he made a breakthrough with the set-up of his GP25 Ducati in Hungary.

Aprilia has enjoyed strong recent form in Barcelona, and the Hungarian Grand Prix results for Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin have many predicting them as a big threat this weekend.

Scary moment for Johann Zarco at Turn 5 a few moments ago as he washed the front at the left-hander. He kept it upright, though.

10:13

Not many lap time changes recently at the sharp end. Lots of used tyre running going on, which suggests that there's a fair bit of drop off.

10:08

Good start to the weekend so far for Johann Zarco in third currently. But, he doesn't have the updates the other factory Hondas have.

So, I think we'll see him drop back as the day goes on unfortunately.

Alex Marquez is second right now, just under 0.2s from Marc Marquez.

09:57

Marc Marquez has been tailing Franco Morbidelli for all of this FP1 session so far.

Alex Marquez noted yesterday that Marc had been spending the week studying the testing lap times of his from November. Looks like he's now getting a live showing of where the GP24 is better than he is on the GP25 around here.

Crash - Jack Miller

Jack Miller has gone down at Turn 10. Won't be the last time we see that crash from riders this weekend. He's up and ok.

Not a quick start to the session for Pecco Bagnaia right now. But his Ducati team was working on his second bike. So, perhaps he's gone out on the old set-up to get some data before swapping to the new set-up he used Hungary.

09:52

Marc Marquez now goes top with a 1m39.198s from Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta.

09:51

Vinales improves at the top of the order with a 1m40.268s.

First laps on the board and Maverick Vinales is fastest with a 1m41.652s.

This Barcelona circuit is pretty low-grip and hard on tyre wear. Will be intriguing to see what kind of used tyre pace we get today.

09:42

We've just seen Pecco Bagnaia for the first time this morning. He won both Barcelona races last year.

Hungary was a nightmare weekend, but he felt there was a major breakthrough on Sunday with the set-up of his bike.

Jorge Martin returns to the scene of his 2024 world title in strong form after a fourth in Hungary. He's wary of predictions, but he will be one to keep an eye on.

After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Marc Marquez comes to Barcelona with a 175-point lead in the standings.

If he leaves with a 185-point lead, he will have a first chance at winning the title at Misano.

But, he considers this a weak circuit.

We're just 10 minutes away from the start of FP1.

Wildcard entries

We also have two wildcard entries present this weekend.

Aleix Espargaro is in at the Honda test team for the Catalan Grand Prix - a race he won in 2023.

He is carrying a back injury from a cycling crash, so there is no guarantee he will see out the weekend.

At Aprilia, Lorenzo Savadori is making another appearance this weekend.
