F1 Hungary LIVE: Reaction after Ferrari dominate on Friday

Live coverage of Friday at the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

KEY MOMENTS

  • Aston Martin bring 16 updates to Hungary
  • Stroll stops after suspension failure
  • Leclerc fastest in FP1

The tenth round of the 2026 Formula 1 season takes place at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

A modern classic, the Hungaroring is often described as Monaco without the walls, due to its tight and twisty nature.

As the championship reaches the summer shutdown, all eyes are on Aston Martin, with the team bringing a significant 16-part upgrade, which is hoped to at least allow the team to race with fellow backmarker teams.

McLaren brings its 'Macarena' wing to trial for the first time after electing not to run the device in Austria, while Ferrari has brought an updated version of its own device.

Mercedes will hope to find answers regarding its power unit, after multiple drivers, including George Russell and Oscar Piastri, were less than complimentary about the energy deployment and self-learning systems across the Belgium weekend.

2026 Hungarian Grand Prix Friday schedule

FP1 12:30pm BST - 1:30pm BST

FP2: 4:00pm BST - 5:00pm BST

Straight back to business with times very similar to FP1. A 1m20.103s is a solid opener for Leclerc, who was also the fastest driver in the earlier session.

But Ferrari team-mate Hamilton instantly displaces the Monegasque driver.

FP2 begins in Hungary, but Stroll will not be heading out any time soon, with his Aston Martin still in bits and up on the stands.

15:55

The music has played, and we're ready, with less than five minutes to go before FP2 begins.

15:53

Five drivers sat out FP1 earlier - Antonelli, Piastri, Bearman, Colapinto, and Bottas - so the quintet will need to make up for lost time in the coming hour. The crosswind into Turn 1 has been a constant headache for drivers so far, so rushing into things likely won't be the correct way to go.

Adrian Newey drops first verdict on upgraded Aston Martin F1 car after early failure

Adrian Newey says Aston Martin’s upgraded Formula 1 car showed early “promising results” despite breaking down in its on-track debut at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

All eyes were on Aston Martin’s much-anticipated B-spec 2026 F1 car as it appeared on track for the first time during opening practice at the Hungaroring on Friday.

This was also a horrible moment for Sainz into the first corner. Four-wheels all locked, and he still only narrowly avoided the tyres.

Surprisingly, the component that appears to have failed and pitched Stroll off the track in FP1 was not something that was updated in the recent changes.

Good afternoon!

Welcome back to Hungary, where we are around 45 minutes away from second practice. FP1 was a strong session for Ferrari and Red Bull, while Mercedes looked to have work to do.

Aston Martin would also have been happy with its position, after fitting a significant 16-part upgrade for the weekend. However, a suspension failure for Stroll caused a dramatic spin, and ended the Canadian's session early.

F1 stewards admit major error in Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri clash

Formula 1’s stewards at the Belgian Grand Prix have admitted they should have penalised Charles Leclerc for his collision with Oscar Piastri, it has been claimed.

Leclerc was controversially not penalised following a clash with Piastri as the pair jostled for third place at Les Combes on the eighth lap of last Sunday’s race at Spa-Francorchamps.

Another strong session for Red Bull. Verstappen is yet to win a race this term, and this would be an ideal moment, before his home race, which comes straight after the summer break.

McLaren focused on updates rather than outright pace in FP1. The times should come down in FP2.

In terms of pace, a strong session for Ferrari.

Sainz has now been given a black-and-white flag for impeding. He will have to watch his conduct in the coming sessions. That's a final warning for the Spaniard.

Chequered flag in FP1

The chequered flag falls in FP1, and Leclerc is the fastest driver, despite ending his hour in the garage with a reliability problem.

13:29

Unless something crazy happens now, the top 10 in FP1 will be:

  1. Leclerc
  2. Verstappen
  3. Hamilton
  4. Hadjar
  5. Russell
  6. Bortoleto
  7. Vesti
  8. Hulkenberg
  9. Lindblad
  10. Lawson
13:28

Drivers are coming out once more to complete post-session practice starts from the grid.

13:26

Sainz will now be investigated post-session for a second instance of erratic driving. One investigation is normally a reprimand, but two could lead to something more.

13:25

Leclerc has come to a stop just after pulling into the pit lane. It looked like he was pulling onto the FIA weighbridge, but he climbs out and the Ferrari mechanics run down to recover the car.

Into the penultimate corner, his power unit appeared to cut out. The sound was more like a gearbox problem, though.

13:21

Sainz stops in the run-off for Turn one after locking up all four tyres into the corner. He slid almost completely into the tyre barrier. Those tyres will be in the bin when he returns to the garage.

Fortunately, he finds reverse and gets the car turned.
